A few weeks ago Karen gives me a call with a large tortoise she wants to donate to our program. An African Spur Thighed Tortoise that is about 15 years old. I know they can get big so I inquire as to the weight. About 75 lbs, Karen tells me. Now most folks over estimate the size and weight of the animals they want to donate by at least 2 feet and 20 lbs. So I pack up my largest carrier which holds two large Rouen Ducks comfortably and head to Baltimore.
I get out of the truck and the first words out of my mouth are, "
Wow! That's a BiG Tortoise." She won't fit in my carrier so she roams the back of my SUV on the ride home. In the past 18 years I have never seen one this big! Her name is Pepe but my daughter is calling her Mabel. She is at least 75 lbs and gorgeous. See for yourself.
